Her father would spend half of a week with her and the other half with his wife and other kids. After a few years Tracy Emin's father left her family and took his money resulting in Emin's mother being left bankrupt. This lead the family to be forced into poverty she revealed that they could never have gas and electric on at the same time.
During this time she was raped at the age of 13 in Margate, this type of crime was very common in the area she was living in. He work displays  early childhood, childhood abuse and sexual assault.
She left Margate between 1980-1902 to study fashion at the Medway College Of Design That was when she met Billy Childish as he was also studying there until he got expelled.
In 1987 their relationship ended this concluded in her moving back to London  and studied Art at the Royal College Of Art. However after leaving college she went through a very traumatic experience in her life where she went through two abortions this shattered everything she was working for at the College Of Art.

During her life she suffered a four day depression after splitting from a personal relationship, which caused her to stay in bed smoking and having sex with random people, resulting in her bed being very dirty and messy. Condoms, vodka bottles and cigarette buts were seen to be lying around. When she managed to escape her downward spiral she looked at the bed and what her depression caused her to be, she looked at the dirty bed sheets, the piles of junk from her daily life.
She said in an interview from the time, "I got up and took a bath and looked at the bed and thought, 'Christ, I made that'." The work was nominated for the Turner prize in 1999.
