workshop -8/1/18

8/1/18

This term we will be studying the practitioners: Peter Brook, Artaud and Yoshi Oida

The first exercise we did was the 9 holes exercise exercise created by Yoshi Oida, it is both emotional and spiritual, he use to do this cleansing every morning to clean his body and mind so he is ready for the days practical activities.

This exercise is based of the a myth Misorgi: God wanted to be a better person and to find out about himself he believed that by going and adapting to living underwater he would be able to achieve that, This exercise involves using water to cleanse different parts of your body. But before Yoshi Oida cleansed he would get himself and his other actors to clean the space so its ready to be a creative area where people can imagine and act. That is the first thing we did when we entered the room we cleaned it as much as we could.
After we cleaned the space we got a cup of water and a blueberry, we went and stood in our own spaces by ourselves so we were only focused on our own mind and body, we put our fingertips into the water as if it were the most precious thing we felt, but we weren't just touching water we really had to feel it. Using the water on our fingertips we messaged our: eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and the belly button (the hara) we focused more on the hara because it is what is connecting you to your mother and there mothers so forth. We discussed how when we attach jewelry to our body we forget where they actually came from, before our time natives would place jewelry on themselves as a celebration so they would celebrate their bodies.
After this exercises i feel like my mind was so much clearer because i just had all that time to clear all the troubles and thoughts, while feeling motivated and energised to start working and start creating theatre.

We then did this exercise called 'walking into nothing' which was created by Peter Brook who believed in making theatre by moving and not speaking so this allowed people from all around the world to be in and watch his plays. Half of us had to close our eyes and the other would tap the shoulders of their partner and we had to follow the direction of their tap.
We had to trust our senses and walk around the room with our eyes shut, when i first heard what we were doing i felt sort of scared that i was going to walk into a wall or bump into someone. But surprisingly i didn't. I believe that this exercise really heightened our other sensed beside from sight so even though we couldn't see where we were going we could sense if someone or something was in front of us. Completing this exercise taught me about: my connection with the rest of the company trusting and engaging with the space and people around me.
