In the beginning of theatre workshop we started focusing on our essay questions and how to answer and analyse the question.
Our question:



Discuss the impact of Peter Brooks on the British Theatrical Landscape

- Identifying the characteristics of his works
- What changes occurred
- What new/unconventional ideas came from him 
- Audience response 
- Theatre before Brooks compared to theatre now 

British Theatrical Landscape 
- Theatres in Britain now e.g. the people who make it and the people who put it on 

What we know about Peter Brooks 
  • He covered Shakespeare 
  • He prefers 'non-directional acting'
  • Introduced England to the avant-garde plays of jean cocteau
  • Shakespeare and the RSC were a big part in his early career 
  • Brooks Theatres were stripped back (little to no set) 
  • He's written a famous book called 'The Empty Space' 
  • Has a strong affect on his audience 
  • Brooks plays are non-language focused (internationalist)
  • You don't need to understand the language to understand his plays
Peter Brooks 
  • Very privileged (went to oxford) 
  • Was a director at the age of 22 at the RSC
  • Pre-blocked his first play 
  • He changed Theatre, he scrapped pre-planning theatre- having a conversation with the actors 
  • Peter Brooks was the first one who performed Artaud on a large scale 
  • Commercial Theatre is three weeks in rehearsal Brooks questioned this because he said "its killing imagination" that is why he left Europe
  • Formed an international company in Paris 
  • 'Empty Space'  a very popular book written by Brookes everyone refers to it.

Midsummer Nights Dream 
  • Brooks turned this into a dream scape using circus acts 
  • He didn't follow the narrative 
  • Very imaginative
  • different from the original text 

Lord Of The Flies
  • The movie was directed by Brooks 
  • He wanted to be a film director 

The man who
  • This is about a man who is completely paralyzed on his right side
